ZIFT stands for:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 3
The correct answer is Option (3) → Zygote intra fallopian transfer
ZIFT is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) for infertility. In in vitro fertilisation (IVF), the ova and sperms are collected and fused in the laboratory to form a zygote. The zygote or an early embryo of up to 8 blastomeres is then transferred into the fallopian tube. Embryos of more than 8 blastomeres are placed in the uterus (IUT).
(1) Zygote inter follicle transfer — Incorrect. No such technique exists. The zygote goes to the fallopian tube, not to a follicle.
(2) Zygote intra follicle transfer — Incorrect. No such technique exists.
(3) Zygote intra fallopian transfer — Correct. “Intra” means inside. The zygote is put inside the fallopian tube.
(4) Zygote inter fallopian transfer — Incorrect. The correct word is “intra”, not “inter”. Do not mix it up with GIFT, which is gamete intra fallopian transfer.
