Aman and Vimal are partners in a firm sharing profits and losses in the ratio of 3:2. They admitted Kamal into partnership for 1/4 share in profits. Kamal brings in Rs. 50,000 for capital and the requisite amount of premium in cash. The goodwill of the firm is valued at Rs. 30,000. The new profit sharing ratio is 2:1:1. The premium brought in by Kamal will be shared between Aman and Vimal in following.
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → Aman’s share Rs. 3,000 and Vimal’s share Rs. 4,500
The premium for goodwill that the new partner brings is shared by the old partners in their sacrificing ratio (old share − new share), because it pays them for the share of profit each of them gives up.
Kamal’s share of goodwill (premium) = 1/4 × Rs. 30,000 = Rs. 7,500
Aman’s sacrifice = 3/5 − 2/4 = 12/20 − 10/20 = 2/20
Vimal’s sacrifice = 2/5 − 1/4 = 8/20 − 5/20 = 3/20
Sacrificing ratio of Aman and Vimal = 2 : 3
Aman’s share = 2/5 × Rs. 7,500 = Rs. 3,000
Vimal’s share = 3/5 × Rs. 7,500 = Rs. 4,500
Sharing the premium in the old ratio 3 : 2 would give Option (3) the other way round; here the new ratio 2 : 1 : 1 makes Vimal give up more than Aman, so Vimal gets the larger part.
