Arrange the following levels of regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes in correct sequence.
(A) Processing level
(B) Translational level
(C) Transcriptional level
(D) Transport of mRNA from nucleus to the cytoplasm
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → (C), (A), (D), (B)
(C) Transcriptional level — first. The gene is copied into the primary transcript. Control here decides whether an RNA is made at all.
(A) Processing level — second. The primary transcript is processed. Control of splicing decides which pieces are joined to make the mature mRNA.
(D) Transport of mRNA from nucleus to the cytoplasm — third. In eukaryotes the mRNA is made in the nucleus, but proteins are made in the cytoplasm. So the mRNA must move out, and this movement can also be controlled.
(B) Translational level — last. In the cytoplasm the mRNA is translated into a polypeptide on the ribosomes. This is the final step at which expression can be controlled.
