Arrange the given phases of menstrual cycle in correct sequence.
(A) Proliferative phase
(B) Next cycle begins
(C) Secretory phase
(D) Ovulatory phase
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → (A), (D), (C), (B)
(A) Proliferative phase — first. After menstruation, the follicular phase begins. A primary follicle in the ovary grows into a mature Graafian follicle, and the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows again by proliferation. So this phase is also called the proliferative phase.
(D) Ovulatory phase — second. In the middle of the cycle (about the 14th day), the LH surge makes the Graafian follicle burst and release the ovum. This is ovulation.
(C) Secretory phase — third. This is the luteal phase. The remaining part of the Graafian follicle becomes the corpus luteum. It secretes large amounts of progesterone, which keeps the endometrium ready for implantation. So this phase is also called the secretory phase.
(B) Next cycle begins — last. If the ovum is not fertilised, the corpus luteum breaks down. The endometrium breaks down too, and menstruation starts the next cycle.

NCERT Extract:
Menstrual Cycle – “… The menstrual phase is followed by the follicular phase. During this phase, the primary follicles in the ovary grow to become a fully mature Graafian follicle and simultaneously the endometrium of uterus regenerates through proliferation.”
Menstrual Cycle – “… Rapid secretion of LH leading to its maximum level during the mid-cycle called LH surge induces rupture of Graafian follicle and thereby the release of ovum (ovulation). The ovulation (ovulatory phase) is followed by the luteal phase during which the remaining parts of the Graafian follicle transform as the corpus luteum (Figure 2.9).”
Menstrual Cycle – “… In the absence of fertilisation, the corpus luteum degenerates.”
