Amrita and Pritam are partners in a firm sharing profits in the ratio of 3:2. They admitted Manya as a new partner for 1/3rd share. The new profit sharing ratio between Amrita and Pritam will be 1:1. Calculate their sacrificing ratio.
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → 4:1
Each old partner’s sacrifice is his old share less his new share: Sacrifice = Old share − New share. The sacrifices, put side by side, give the sacrificing ratio.
Old shares: Amrita 3/5, Pritam 2/5
Manya takes 1/3, so 2/3 is left for Amrita and Pritam
New shares at 1 : 1: Amrita 1/3, Pritam 1/3
Amrita’s sacrifice = 3/5 − 1/3 = 9/15 − 5/15 = 4/15
Pritam’s sacrifice = 2/5 − 1/3 = 6/15 − 5/15 = 1/15
Sacrificing ratio = 4/15 : 1/15 = 4 : 1
Check: 4/15 + 1/15 = 5/15 = 1/3, which is Manya’s share. The old ratio of 3 : 2 is the sacrificing ratio only when nothing is said about the new ratio of the old partners.
