The term vitamin was coined from the word vital +amine since the earlier identified compounds had amino groups. Later work showed that most of them didn't contain amino groups. They are very essential for the body. They has to be taken various diet or in the form of medicines also.

Vitamins are classified into two groups depending upon their solubility in water or fat.

Fat soluble vitamins are soluble in fat and oils but insoluble in water. They are stored in liver and adipose (fat storing) tissues

Water-soluble vitamins are soluble in water. These must be supplied regularly in diet because they are readily excreated in urine and cannot be stored in our body.

Which among the following is not a fat soluble vitamin?

Options:

Vitamin A

Vitamin D

Vitamin C

Vitamin K

Correct Answer:

Vitamin C

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (3) → Vitamin C

Classification of Vitamins

Vitamins are classified into two main groups based on their solubility:

1. Fat-Soluble Vitamins These are soluble in fats and oils but insoluble in water. They are stored in the liver and adipose (fat-storing) tissues. Because they are stored, excessive intake can lead to toxicity (hypervitaminosis).

  • Vitamins: A, D, E, and K.

2. Water-Soluble Vitamins These dissolve in water and are not stored in the body to any significant extent. Excess amounts are excreted through urine, which is why they must be supplied regularly in the diet.

  • Vitamins: C and the B-complex group (B1, B2, B6, B12, etc.).
