The primary court of the United Nations is referred to as the International Court of Justice. The International Court of Justice Statute was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1946. By virtue of Article of the United Nations Charter, all UN members are automatically parties to this statute, and under the Article, non-members may also join as parties. If the parties consent to appear in court and to be bound by the court's judgement, the court may have the authority to hear the matter. If called for under a contract between parties, the court may also serve as a forum, and in some circumstances, referring a disagreement to the court is mandatory.
