Time, Speed and Distance

Question:

Excluding stoppages, the speed of a bus is 60 kmph and including stoppages, it is 54 kmph. For how many minutes does the bus stop per hour?

Options:

4 mins

6 mins

7 mins

5 mins

Correct Answer:

6 mins

Explanation:

The average speed (including stoppages) = 54 km/h

Distance = speed × time

So in 1 hr, distance traveled = 54 km

The average speed (excluding stoppages) = 60 km/h

At this speed, time is taken by bus to travel 54 km = \(\frac{54}{60}\)

= \(\frac{9}{10}\)

= 54 minutes.

So at a speed of 60 km/h, the bus can travel a distance of 54 km every 54 minutes.

For every Hour, the bus stops for = 60 - 54

= 6 minutes

So , The bus stops per hour for 6 min.
