The Delhi Silpi Chakra was founded on 25 March, 1949. The member-artists initially met at Jantar Mantar and later at Sanyal's studio at Gole Market. It held its first exhibition, in November that year, at the barracks of the Masonic Lodge on Janpath.

In 1943, under the leadership of Prodosh Das Gupta, a sculptor, few young artists formed the Calcutta Group, which included Nirode Mazumdar, Paritosh Sen, Gopal Ghose and Rathin Moitra.

In Bombay, another set of artists formed a group, called The Progressives in 1946. Francis Newton Souza was the outspoken leader of the group, which included M.F. Husain, K. H. Ara, S.A. Bakre, H.A. Gade and S.H. Raza. Souza wanted to question the conventions that had prevailed in art schools.

The Baroda Group of Artists was formed in the year 1956 by G.R. Santosh, Ratan Parimoo, K.G. Subramanyan, Prabha Dongre, Shanti Dave, K. Patel, Triloke Kaul, Vinay Trivedi, N.S. Bendre, Balkrishna Patel, Jyoti Bhatt, Prafull Dave, and Ramesh Pandya.

In 1963, Group 1890 was formed under the leadership of J. Swaminathan.
