Case: Read the passage and answer the following questions A colloid is a heterogeneous system in which one substance is dispersed (dispersed phase) as very fine particles in another substance called a dispersion medium. The essential difference between a solution and a colloid is that of particle size. Colloids are classified based on the following criteria: (i) Physical state of the dispersed phase and dispersion medium (ii) Nature of interaction between the dispersed phase and dispersion medium (iii) Type of particles of the dispersed phase. |
Substances which behave as normal electrolytes solution at low concentration and exhibit colloids properties at higher concentration are called; |
Lyophilic colloids Lyophobic colloids Macromolecular colloids Associated colloids |
Associated colloids |
Associated colloids are those colloids which behave as normal strong electrolytes at low concentrations but exhibit colloidal properties at higher concentrations due to the formation of aggregated particles. The aggregated particles thus formed are called micelles. |
