Arrange the following stages of embryo development in a dicot plant, in correct sequence.
(A) Heart-shaped embryo
(B) Mature embryo
(C) Zygote
(D) Globular embryo
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → (C), (D), (A), (B)
(C) Zygote — first. It is formed by the fusion of the male gamete with the egg cell (syngamy). It is the starting point of the embryo.
(D) Globular embryo — second. The zygote first gives rise to a small mass of cells, the proembryo. This grows into a round, ball-like globular embryo.
(A) Heart-shaped embryo — third. The two cotyledons begin to form, so the embryo takes the shape of a heart.
(B) Mature embryo — last. A mature dicot embryo has two cotyledons and an embryonal axis (epicotyl and hypocotyl).

NCERT Extract:
Embryo – “… Though the seeds differ greatly, the early stages of embryo development (embryogeny) are similar in both monocotyledons and dicotyledons. Figure 1.13 depicts the stages of embryogeny in a dicotyledonous embryo. The zygote gives rise to the proembryo and subsequently to the globular, heart-shaped and mature embryo.”
