Question:

In 60 litres mixture of milk and water, the ratio of volumes of milk and water is 3 : 2. If we want the ratio of the volumes of milk and water to be 1 : 1, then how much water should be added to the mixture?

Options:

10 litres

16 litres

12 litres

14 litres

Correct Answer:

12 litres

Explanation:

M : W = 3 : 2,

Quantity of mixture = 60 L

⇒ (3 + 2)x = 60,

⇒ 5x = 60,

⇒ x = 12 L

⇒ Milk = 3 x 12 = 36 L, Water = 2 x 12 = 24 L

⇒ Amount of water to be added to make ratio 1 : 1,

⇒ Milk = Water

⇒ 36 = 24 + x

⇒ x = 36 - 24

x = 12 Liters,

Hence, 12 Liters water should be added to make the ration of milk and water 1 : 1.
