On January 30, 1948, Nathuram Vinayaka Godse, an extremist, assassinated Gandhi during his evening prayer in Delhi, bringing an end to his lifelong struggle for truth, non-violence, justice, and tolerance. He fired three bullets at him and killed him instantly.

The States Reorganization Commission was established in 1953 to study linguistic and cultural divisions and recommend state boundary changes. The Commission concluded that state boundaries should align with linguistic boundaries, acknowledging India's linguistic diversity and respecting regional identities. Based on the Commission's recommendations, the States Reorganization Act was passed in 1956, providing a constitutional basis for the creation of linguistic states. The implementation of the act led to the formation of 14 new states and 6 union territories, promoting better governance, administration, and representation of diverse linguistic and cultural groups.

Another major reorganization of states took place in the northeast in 1972. Meghalaya was carved out of Assam in 1972.  Manipur and Tripura too emerged as separate states in the same year.

While language played a significant role in the formation of states, it was not the only determining factor. Over time, demands for separate states have emerged based on distinct regional cultures and grievances regarding uneven development. This led to the creation of Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand in 2000, followed by the emergence of Telangana as a new state on 2nd June 2014.
