Which one of the following structures of oviduct which joins the uterus?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → Isthmus
The oviduct (fallopian tube) has three parts, taken from the ovary towards the uterus: the infundibulum, the ampulla and the isthmus.
(1) Isthmus — Correct. It is the last part. It has a narrow lumen and it joins the uterus.
(2) Ampulla — Incorrect. This is the wider middle part of the oviduct. Fertilisation takes place here.
(3) Infundibulum — Incorrect. This is the funnel-shaped opening next to the ovary.
(4) Fimbriae — Incorrect. These are finger-like projections on the edge of the infundibulum. They help to collect the ovum after ovulation.
NCERT Extract:
The Female Reproductive System – “… The oviducts (fallopian tubes), uterus and vagina constitute the female accessory ducts. Each fallopian tube is about 10-12 cm long and extends from the periphery of each ovary to the uterus (Figure 2.3b), the part closer to the ovary is the funnel-shaped infundibulum. The edges of the infundibulum possess finger-like projections called fimbriae, which help in collection of the ovum after ovulation. The infundibulum leads to a wider part of the oviduct called ampulla. The last part of the oviduct, isthmus has a narrow lumen and it joins the uterus.”
