Inorganic: Coordination Compounds

Question:

Which of the two compounds, [Fe(H2O)6]3+ or [Fe(CN)6]3- is strongly paramagnetic?

Options:

[Fe(H2O)6]3+

[Fe(CN)6]3-

Both are equally paramagnetic in behaviour

None of these

Correct Answer:

[Fe(H2O)6]3+

Explanation:

[Fe(H2O)6]3+ is strongly paramagnetic because in both the compounds Fe3+(3d5) ion is present, but H2O is a weak ligand, and it does not pair up 3d electrons resulting in the formation of outer orbital complex.

On the other hand, CN- is a strong field ligand leaving only 1 unpaired electron making the complex weakly paramagnetic.
