Boats and Streams

Question:

A man can row a boat with the speed of 6 km/hr in still water. If speed of stream is 2 km/hr, it takes 3 hours more to go against the stream to a certain distance than with stream. Accordingly, what is the distance?

Options:

30 km

24 km

20 km

32 km

Correct Answer:

24 km

Explanation:

(D.S) Downstream speed = 6 + 2 = 8 km/hr.

(U.S) Upstream speed = 6 - 2 = 4 km/hr.

Distance = \(\frac{D.S\;×\;U.S}{D.S\;-\;U.S}\) × Time

             = \(\frac{8\;×\;4}{8\;-\;4}\) × 3 = \(\frac{32}{4}\) × 3 = 24 km
