Question:

If point B(0, 1) is equidistant from points A(5, -3) and C(x, 6), then find the values of x.

Options:

±2

±8

±4

±5

Correct Answer:

±4

Explanation:

If the points are equidistant,

then, \(\sqrt {(5-0)^2 + (-3-1)^2}\) = \(\sqrt {(x-0)^2 + (6-1)^2}\)

\(\sqrt{25 + 16}\) = \(\sqrt{(x^2 + 25)}\)

x2 = 41-25 = 16

x = ±4

The correct answer is Option (3) → ±4
