Arrange the following scientists which are involved in the study of inheritance in correct chronological order.
(A) de Vries, Correns and von Tschermak
(B) Sutton and Boveri
(C) T. H. Morgan
(D) Gregor Mendel
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → (D), (A), (B), (C)
(D) Gregor Mendel — he comes first. He did his pea experiments for seven years and proposed the laws of inheritance, long before the others.
(A) de Vries, Correns and von Tschermak — they come second. In 1900 these three scientists, each on his own, rediscovered Mendel’s results.
(B) Sutton and Boveri — they come third. In 1902 they saw that chromosomes behave in the same way as Mendel’s factors and used this to explain his laws. This is the chromosomal theory of inheritance.
(C) T. H. Morgan — he comes last. He worked on the chromosomal theory in the fruit fly and found linkage and recombination. His work built on the chromosomal theory.

Chromosomal Theory of Inheritance – “… In 1900, three Scientists (de Vries, Correns and von Tschermak) independently rediscovered Mendel’s results on the inheritance of characters. Also, by this time due to advancements in microscopy that were taking place, scientists were able to carefully observe cell division. This led to the discovery of structures in the nucleus that appeared to double and divide just before each cell division. These were called chromosomes (colored bodies, as they were visualised by staining). By 1902, the chromosome movement during meiosis had been worked out. Walter Sutton and Theodore Boveri noted that the behaviour of chromosomes was parallel to the behaviour of genes and used chromosome movement (Figure 4.8) to explain Mendel’s laws (Table 4.3).”
