Manipur, Tripura, and Meghalaya became separate states in 1972.
Since 1947, the North-East region has undergone significant transformation. In the post-Independence period, Tripura, Manipur, and the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, which were previously Princely States, integrated with India. A comprehensive political reorganization has taken place across the entire North-Eastern territory. Nagaland emerged as a distinct State in 1963, followed by the establishment of Manipur, Tripura, and Meghalaya in 1972. Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh achieved separate Statehood status later, in 1987. The Partition of India in 1947 altered the region's dynamics, rendering it landlocked and adversely impacting its economy. This geographical isolation led to developmental neglect, as the area was disconnected from the rest of India, with repercussions for both its development and political landscape. Simultaneously, numerous States within this region underwent significant demographic shifts due to the inflow of migrants from adjacent States and countries. |
