The land revenue systems under the British government was majorly of 3 types i.e. Zamindari system, Ryotwari system and Mahalwari system. Under Zamindari system the ownership of land was shifted from farmers to zamindars. The zamindars became the actual owners, whereas farmers became peasants. Zamindars had the right to collect rent from the farmers. In Ryotwari system, the ownership rights were given to the peasants and the taxes were collected directly from the peasants by the government. Under Mahalwari system also, the ownership rights were with the peasants and taxes were aggressive in nature. |
