Question:

Chamanlal, Arshad and Jagjit Singh contested an election. All the votes polled were valid. Arshad got 35% of the total votes. For every 35 votes Chamanlal got 14 votes. The winner got 4950 more votes than the person who received the least number of votes. Find the total number of votes polled.

Options:

99000

33000

13378

38000

Correct Answer:

33000

Explanation:

Let the total number of votes polled be X

Arshad got votes = X × \(\frac{35}{100}\) = \(\frac{7X}{20}\)

Chamanlal got votes = \(\frac{X}{35}\) × 14 = \(\frac{2X}{5}\)

Jagjit got votes = X -  \(\frac{7X}{20}\) - \(\frac{2X}{5}\)
= \(\frac{X}{4}\)

Jagjit got less number of votes while Chamanlal won the election.

Then,

\(\frac{2X}{5}\) = \(\frac{X}{4}\) + 4950

X = 33000
