Following reactions may occur at cathode during the electrolysis of aqueous CuCl2 solution using Pt electrodes: |
Cu2+(aq) + 2e- → Cu (s) H+(aq) + e- → \(\frac{1}{2}\)H2 (g) Both reactions are equally feasible No reaction is feasible at all |
Cu2+(aq) + 2e- → Cu (s) |
Since the standard electrode potential of Cu2+ is greater than that of H+, so reaction (i) will be feasible at cathode. |
