NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a military alliance that was established in April 1949 with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty. It was headed by the USA. Its original membership included various Western European nations, the United States, and Canada. The purpose of NATO was to provide collective defense against the threat of expansion by the Soviet Union and its allies. There are currently 32 member countries in NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

In response to the formation of NATO, the Eastern Bloc, led by the Soviet Union, formed its own military alliance known as the Warsaw Pact in 1955, which included countries from Central and Eastern Europe. It was led by the Soviet Union. Its principal function was to counter NATO’s forces in Europe. The Warsaw Pact, a military alliance among Eastern Bloc communist countries, formally became inactive on July 1, 1991. The dissolution of the Warsaw Pact occurred as a result of the political changes and the end of the Cold War in Europe, which led to the disintegration of the Eastern Bloc and the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union.

In 1961 the USA sponsored the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba.

Gamal Abdel Nasser ruled Egypt from 1952 to 1970. He espoused the causes of Arab nationalism, socialism and anti-imperialism. He nationalised the Suez Canal, leading to an international conflict in 1956. Britain attacked Egypt over the issue of nationalization of suez canal in 1956.
