Arrange the following structures involved in embryogenesis in the correct sequence.
(A) Zygote
(B) Blastocyst
(C) Blastomeres
(D) Morula
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → (A), (C), (D), (B)
(A) Zygote — first. Fertilisation in the ampullary region of the fallopian tube gives a single diploid cell, the zygote.
(C) Blastomeres — second. As the zygote moves towards the uterus, mitotic divisions called cleavage turn it into 2, 4, 8 and 16 cells, the blastomeres.
(D) Morula — third. Once the embryo is a solid ball of 8 to 16 cells, it looks like a mulberry and takes this name.
(B) Blastocyst — last. The morula goes on dividing and becomes a blastocyst, with an outer trophoblast and an inner cell mass. The blastocyst is the stage that implants in the endometrium.
NCERT Extract:
Fertilisation and Implantation – “… The mitotic division starts as the zygote moves through the isthmus of the oviduct called cleavage towards the uterus (Figure 2.11) and forms 2, 4, 8, 16 daughter cells called blastomeres. The embryo with 8 to 16 blastomeres is called a morula (Figure 2.11e). The morula continues to divide and transforms into blastocyst (Figure 2.11g) as it moves further into the uterus.”
