Chronological order of the formation of given states:

The bilingual state of Bombay was created in 1956 which comprised Marathi-speaking and Gujarati-speaking regions. After a popular agitation, the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra were created on 1st May 1960 by separating the Gujarati-speaking areas of Bombay.

In 1966, Hindi-speaking regions of Punjab were carved out to form the state of Haryana. The hilly and mountainous areas located in the northern part of Punjab were transferred to Himachal Pradesh.

Meghalaya was carved out of Assam. It attained full statehood in January 1972.

On the basis of a separate regional culture or complaints of regional imbalance in development, the states of Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand, were created in the year 2000.
