| LIST I | LIST II | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| A. | Zener Diode | I. | Detect optical signals |
| B. | LED | II. | Voltage Regulator |
| C. | Rectifier | III. | Remote Control |
| D. | Photo diode | IV. | AC to DC |
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → A-II, B-III, C-IV, D-I
Each diode is used according to how its p-n junction behaves in forward bias, reverse bias or breakdown.
(A) Zener Diode — this matches (II) Voltage Regulator. In reverse breakdown the voltage across a Zener diode stays almost constant over a wide range of current.
(B) LED — this matches (III) Remote Control. A forward-biased light emitting diode gives off light, and an infrared LED sends the signal in a remote control.
(C) Rectifier — this matches (IV) AC to DC. A junction diode conducts in forward bias only, so it passes one half of the a.c. cycle.
(D) Photo diode — this matches (I) Detect optical signals. In reverse bias its current changes with the intensity of the light falling on it.
Note: Items (B) LED and (C) Rectifier of this question are from the latest textbook (2026-27). Items (A) Zener Diode and (D) Photo diode are printed only in the pre-rationalised textbook (2022-23). They were removed from the latest book, and they also appear to be out of the CUET 2026 syllabus.
NCERT (2026-27):
Application of Junction Diode as a Rectifier – “… This property is used to rectify alternating voltages and the circuit used for this purpose is called a rectifier.”
Infrared Waves – “… Electronic devices (for example semiconductor light emitting diodes) also emit infrared and are widely used in the remote switches of household electronic systems such as TV sets, video recorders and hi-fi systems.”
NCERT (Pre-rationalised edition, 2022-23):
Zener Diode – “… It is designed to operate under reverse bias in the breakdown region and used as a voltage regulator.”
Optoelectronic Junction Devices – “… (i) Photodiodes used for detecting optical signal (photodetectors).”
