Arrange the following steps of decomposition of detritus in correct sequence.
A. Leaching
B. Humification
C. Fragmentation
D. Mineralisation
Choose the correct sequence of steps of decomposition
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → C, A, B, D
C. Fragmentation — first. Decomposition breaks down complex dead organic matter (detritus) into simple inorganic substances. It starts when detritivores such as earthworms break the detritus into smaller particles.
A. Leaching — second. Water-soluble inorganic nutrients sink into the soil. There they are held as salts that plants cannot use.
B. Humification — third. After bacteria and fungi break the detritus down further (catabolism), a dark, shapeless substance called humus collects. It resists the action of microbes, so it decomposes very slowly.
D. Mineralisation — last. Some microbes slowly break down the humus and release inorganic nutrients into the soil.
