Aryan and Bala are partners in a firm. They admitted Charu as a partner with 20% share in profits of the firm. Charu brings Rs. 2,00,000 as her share of capital. Calculate the value of Charu's share of goodwill on the basis of her capital, given that the combined capital of Aryan and Bala after all adjustments is Rs. 5,00,000.
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 1
The correct answer is Option (1) → Rs. 60,000
When the new partner’s capital fixes the value of the whole firm, any excess of that value over the real capital of all partners is hidden goodwill, and the new partner’s share of it is what she pays for.
Total capital of the new firm = Rs. 2,00,000 ÷ 20% = Rs. 10,00,000
Actual capital = Rs. 5,00,000 (Aryan and Bala) + Rs. 2,00,000 (Charu) = Rs. 7,00,000
Goodwill of the firm = Rs. 10,00,000 − Rs. 7,00,000 = Rs. 3,00,000
Charu’s share = 20% of Rs. 3,00,000 = Rs. 60,000
Rs. 3,00,000 is the goodwill of the whole firm, not Charu’s share of it.
