Identify the year of ‘First Revenue Settlement’ in the Bombay Deccan?
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 2
The correct answer is Option (2) → 1818
The Bombay Deccan came under British rule in the early nineteenth century, and the Company then fixed the revenue that the ryots had to pay under the ryotwari system. The first revenue settlement in the Bombay Deccan was made in 1818. The demand was so high that in many places peasants deserted their villages and moved to new regions.
Note 1: The NCERT book is not consistent on this date. Its timeline lists ‘1818 First revenue settlement in the Bombay Deccan’, while the section ‘Revenue demand and peasant debt’ says that the first revenue settlement ‘was made in the 1820s’, and a later page says ‘in the 1820s and 1830s’. On the body text one can argue for Option (3), 1828. NTA has taken the year from the timeline, and since the timeline is the only place in the book that names an exact year, Option (2) is the most appropriate answer.
