Question:

If the area of the triangle with vertices A(x, 4), B(-2, 4) and C(2, -6) is 35 sq units, then the values of x are :

Options:

5, -9

5, 9

-5, 9

5, 7

Correct Answer:

5, -9

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (1) → 5, -9

Area = $\begin{vmatrix}\frac{1}{2}\begin{vmatrix}x&4&1\\-2&4&1\\2&-6&1\end{vmatrix}\end{vmatrix}$

$⇒\left|\frac{1}{2}(10)(x+2)\right|=35$

$\left|(x+2)\right|=7$

So $x+2=±7⇒x=5, -9$
