Question:

In an election between two candidates, the total number of votes polled were 'y'. Out of these, 40% votes were invalid. The winning candidate got 60% of the valid votes, while the other candidate lost by 6000 votes. Find the value of 'y'.

Options:

45000

50000

40000

30000

Correct Answer:

50000

Explanation:

40% = \(\frac{2}{5}\) & 60% = \(\frac{3}{5}\)

Let total number of votes = 100x

Invalid votes =  \(\frac{2}{5}\) × 100x = 40x

Valid votes = 100x - 40x = 60x

Votes of Winner candidate = \(\frac{3}{5}\) × 60x = 36x

Votes of looser candidate = 60x - 36x = 24x

ATQ,

( 36x - 24x ) = 6000

12x = 6000

x = 500

Total Number of votes = 100x

= 100 × 500

= 50000

So , Total number of votes = 50,000
