Question:

Which of the following statements is not correct?

Options:

Osmotic pressure is directly proportional to molar concentration.

A Hypertonic solution will be less concentrated with respect to other solution.

Isotonic solutions have same molar concentrations.

Osmotic pressure depends upon temperature.

Correct Answer:

A Hypertonic solution will be less concentrated with respect to other solution.

Explanation:

If we place the cells in a solution containing more than 0.9% (mass/volume) sodium chloride, water will flow out of the cells, and they would shrink. Such a solution is called hypertonic.

or

A hypertonic solution is actually more concentrated compared to another solution.

In a hypertonic solution, the concentration of solute particles is higher compared to another solution or the surrounding environment. This difference in concentration creates an osmotic pressure gradient, causing water molecules to move from an area of lower solute concentration (hypotonic solution) to an area of higher solute concentration (hypertonic solution) through a semi-permeable membrane. This movement of water is called osmosis.

As a result of osmosis, when a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, water molecules will move out of the cell, causing it to shrink or undergo crenation in the case of red blood cells. Conversely, if a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution where the solute concentration is lower, water molecules will move into the cell, causing it to swell or potentially burst (lyse).

Therefore, it is important to note that a hypertonic solution is more concentrated, not less concentrated, compared to another solution.
