The founder of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) is Mahendra Lal Sircar.

Mahendra Lal Sircar (1833-1904) was a physician, philanthropist, and educator. He was born in a wealthy Bengali family and received a Western education. After graduating from the Calcutta Medical College, he worked as a physician for several years. However, he was more interested in science and education than in medicine.

In 1876, Sircar founded the IACS as a forum for the cultivation of scientific research in India. The IACS was the first scientific research institute in India and it played a major role in the development of Indian science.

Sircar was also a pioneer of science education in India. He established the Albert Hall Museum in Calcutta in 1877 and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1899.

Sircar was a visionary leader who made significant contributions to the development of science and education in India. He is rightly regarded as one of the founding fathers of Indian science.
