After graduating from the Calcutta Medical College, he worked as a physician for several years. However, he was more interested in science and education than in medicine. In 1876, Sircar founded the IACS as a forum for the cultivation of scientific research in India. The IACS was the first scientific research institute in India and it played a major role in the development of Indian science. Sircar was also a pioneer of science education in India. He established the Albert Hall Museum in Calcutta in 1877 and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1899.
