Note: This question is taken from the pre-rationalised NCERT book, which describes the Ruhr Coal-field of Germany as an industrial region. The latest edition (2026-27) gives the Ruhr only in the section on the Rhine waterway. Both editions are given below for your benefit.
NCERT (2026-27): “The Rhine Waterways … The Rhine flows through Germany and the Netherlands. It is navigable for 700 km from Rotterdam, at its mouth in the Netherlands to Basel in Switzerland. Ocean-going vessels can reach up to Cologne. The Ruhr river joins the Rhine from the east. It flows through a rich coalfield and the whole basin has become a prosperous manufacturing area.”
Pre-rationalised NCERT: “The Ruhr Coal-field, Germany … This has been one of the major industrial regions of Europe for a long time. Coal and iron and steel formed the basis of the economy, but as the demand for coal declined, the industry started shrinking.” |
