Question:

Read the following poem and answer the question that follows :

In Those Days

In those days - they were long ago-
The snow was cold, the night was black.
I licked from my cracked lips
A snowflake, as I looked back

Through branches, the last uneasy snow.
Your shadow, there in the light, was still.
In a little the light went out.
I went on, stumbling_till at last the hill

Hid the house. And, yawning,
In bed in my room, alone,
I would look out: over the quilted
Rooftops, the clear stars shone.

How poor and miserable we were,
How seldom together!
And yet after so long one thinks:
In those days everything was better.

What is the dominant mood of the poem?

Options:

Saddness

Celebrating

Nostalgia

Anger

Correct Answer:

Nostalgia

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (3) - Nostalgia

Saddness
There is some sadness in the poem because the poet remembers a time of poverty, loneliness, and being seldom together. However, sadness is not the main mood. It is only a part of the feeling.

Celebrating
This is incorrect. The poem does not celebrate anything. It reflects on the past in a quiet, thoughtful way.

Nostalgia
This is the correct answer. The entire poem looks back at “those days” with a mixture of longing and reflection. Even though life was poor and difficult, the poet still feels that everything was somehow better back then. This warm, emotional remembrance makes nostalgia the dominant mood.

Anger
This is incorrect. There is no expression of anger in any part of the poem.

Therefore, the mood of the poem is Nostalgia.
