Identify the layers present in young anther.
(A) Endometrium
(B) Endothecium
(C) Epidermis
(D) Middle layers
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 3
The correct answer is Option (3) → (B), (C) and (D) only
A young anther has four microsporangia. Each is surrounded by four wall layers: the epidermis, the endothecium, the middle layers and the tapetum. The outer three layers protect the anther and help it burst open to release pollen. The innermost layer, the tapetum, nourishes the developing pollen grains.
(A) Endometrium — Incorrect. The endometrium is the inner glandular lining of the human uterus. It has nothing to do with an anther.
(B) Endothecium — Correct. It is the layer just below the epidermis.
(C) Epidermis — Correct. It is the outermost protective layer.
(D) Middle layers — Correct. They lie between the endothecium and the tapetum.

Stamen, Microsporangium and Pollen Grain – “… In a transverse of an anther section, a typical microsporangium appears near circular in outline. It is generally surrounded by four wall layers (Figure 1.3b)– the epidermis, endothecium, middle layers and the tapetum. The outer three wall layers perform the function of protection and help in dehiscence of anther to release the pollen.”
