1966: Punjab

1966: Haryana
On the basis of language, Haryana (Hindi-speaking region of east Punjab) was separated as an independent state from the state of Punjab in 1966. Chandigarh is the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.

1971: Himachal Pradesh
It was declared as a Union Territory in 1956. In 1966 majority of the hilly regions of Punjab merged with Himachal Pradesh. On 25 January 1971, it attained full statehood and became the 18th State to be formed under Independent India.
