Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → A-III, B-IV, C-II, D-I
(A) Unquiet Woods — this matches (III) Ram Chandra Guha. Guha’s book tells how villagers in the Himalayan foothills rallied to save their forests, the Chipko Movement.
(B) The logic of collective Action — this matches (IV) Mancur Olson. Olson argues that a social movement is an aggregation of rational individual actors pursuing their self-interest.
(C) Social Movements and the states — this matches (II) Ghanshyam Shah. Ghanshyam Shah edited Social Movements and the State, the source of the account of the Naxalbari uprising.
(D) Weapons of the Weak — this matches (I) James Scott. Scott studied the peasants and labourers of Malaysia, whose protest took the form of everyday acts of resistance.
Tip: Book titles are asked even from the source lines printed under the boxes, so read them along with the boxes.
Note: The lines on Mancur Olson’s The Logic of Collective Action and James Scott’s Weapons of the Weak, in the section ‘Theories of Social Movements’ of the chapter ‘Social Movements’, were there in the pre-rationalised NCERT, which NTA followed in 2023. This section has been deleted from the NCERT book (2025-26), though the chapter is still there, with Guha’s Unquiet Woods and Shah’s book.
NCERT (2025-26): “8.4 Ecological Movements … According to Ramachandra Guha in his book, Unquiet Woods, villagers rallied together to save the oak and rhododendron forests near their villages. When government forest contractors came to cut down the trees, villagers, including large number of women, stepped forward to hug the trees to prevent their being felled. At stake was the question of villagers’ subsistence. All of them relied on the forest to get firewood, fodder and other daily necessities.”
