Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance

Question:

Case: Read the passage and answer the following question(s).

A capacitor is a system of two conductors separated by an insulator. The electric field in the region between the conductors is proportional to the charge Q. That is, if the charge on the capacitor is, say doubled, the electric field will also be doubled at every point. A parallel plate capacitor consists of two large plane parallel conducting plates separated by a small distance. Dielectrics are introduced between the plates to change the nature of capacitors. Capacitors can be connected in series and parallel in a circuit.

Three capacitors of capacitance 5μF, 10μF, 15μF are connected in series. What will be the equivalent capacitance?

Options:

30μF

[6/15]μF

[30/11]μF

[15/6]μF

Correct Answer:

[30/11]μF

Explanation:

For a series connection, 1/C = 1/C1+1/C2+1/C3

                                         = 1/5+1/10+1/15

                                         =11/30

So, C = 30μF/11
