| Azolla pinnata is an aquatic plant, frond floating upon the surface of the water. It grows in quiet and slow-moving water bodies because swift currents and waves break up the plant. It is a good biofertilizer. Azolla is a floating pteridophyte contains as endosymbiont - the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae. Azolla is generally used as a source of nitrogen for the cultivation of rice in certain regions of asia. It is either incorporated into the soil as biofertiliser before the transplantation of rice or it is grown as a dual crop along with rice. |
