Question:

Three shopkeepers A, B and C marked an identical article at ₹4820. A, B and C sold their article on successive discounts of 20% and 20%; 25% and 15%; 30% and 10% respectively. Which shopkeeper gives the maximum discount and how much (in Rs)?

Options:

C, 1780

C, 1783.40

B, 1800

A, 1735.20

Correct Answer:

C, 1783.40

Explanation:

Marked price of article = Rs.4820

Total discount when a% and b% are successive discounts = (a + b) - \(\frac{ab}{100}\)

Total discount for A = (20 + 20) - \(\frac{400}{100}\)  = 36%

Discount for A = 4820 × \(\frac{36}{100}\)  = Rs.1735.2

Total discount for B = (15 + 25) - \(\frac{375}{100}\)  = 36.25%

Discount for B = 4820 × \(\frac{36.25}{100}\) = Rs.1747.25

Total discount for C = (30 + 10) - \(\frac{300}{100}\) = 37%

Discount for C = 4820 × \(\frac{37}{100}\)  = Rs.1783.4
