Question:

In an exam, A gets 20% less than the passing marks and B gets 20% more than passing marks. If the sum of marks obtained by A and B is equal to maximum marks, what is the ratio of passing marks to maximum marks respectively?

Options:

1 : 4

1 : 1

2 : 1

1 : 2

Correct Answer:

1 : 2

Explanation:

Let passing marks = 100x

Marks scored by A = (100-20)% of 100x = 80% of 100x

= 80x

Marks scored by B = (100 + 20)% of 100x  = 120% of 100x

= 120x

So , Total marks obtained by A and B = 120x + 80x = 200x

According to question ,

Total marks obtained by A and B = Maximum marks

So , Ration of Passing marks to Maximum marks is ,

100x  : 200x

= 1 : 2
