It is worth remembering something that John M. Fritz, George Michell and M.S. Nagaraja Rao, who worked for years at Hampi, wrote: “In our study of these monuments of Vijayanagara we have to imagine a whole series of vanished wooden elements – columns, brackets, beams, ceilings, overhanging eaves, and towers – decorated with plaster and painted, perhaps brightly.” Hampi derived its name from that of the local mother goddess, Pampadevi. |
