Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Answer & explanation
Correct answer: option 4
The correct answer is Option (4) → A-III, B-II, C-I, D-IV
Each defect of vision needs a lens of a particular kind: a converging lens where the image falls behind the retina, a diverging lens where it falls in front, and a lens of unequal curvature where the eye is not symmetrical.
(A) Convex lens — this matches (III) Hypermetropia. In a far-sighted eye the image forms behind the retina, and the extra converging power of a convex lens brings it forward onto the retina.
(B) Concave lens — this matches (II) Myopia. In a short-sighted eye the image forms in front of the retina, and a diverging concave lens moves it back onto the retina.
(C) Cylindrical lens — this matches (I) Astigmatism. Astigmatism arises because the cornea has different curvatures in different planes, and a cylindrical lens has curvature in one plane only, which corrects this.
(D) Bi-focal lens — this matches (IV) Presbyopia. A bi-focal lens has a distance portion above and a converging reading portion below, so it serves a person who needs both.
Note: This question is from the pre-rationalised NCERT book (2022-23). The topic was removed from the latest NCERT book (2026-27), and it also appears to be out of the CUET 2026 syllabus.
NCERT (Pre-rationalised edition, 2022-23):
Summary – “… In a defective eye, if the image is focussed before the retina (myopia), a diverging corrective lens is needed; if the image is focussed beyond the retina (hypermetropia), a converging corrective lens is needed. Astigmatism is corrected by using cylindrical lenses.”
The Eye – “… Thus, if an elderly person tries to read a book at about 25 cm from the eye, the image appears blurred. This condition (defect of the eye) is called presbyopia. It is corrected by using a converging lens for reading.”
