Question:

The radius of a circle is 15 cm and the length of one chord of the circle is 20 cm. What is the distance of the chord from the centre of the circle?

Options:

$5\sqrt{5}$ cm

$5\sqrt{3}$ cm

$5\sqrt{2}$ cm

$3\sqrt{3}$ cm

Correct Answer:

$5\sqrt{5}$ cm

Explanation:

We know that,

H2 = B2 + P2

We have,

AB = 20 cm

CA = \(\frac{1}{2}\) × AB = \(\frac{1}{2}\) × 20 = 10 cm

OA = radius = 15 cm

(OC)2 = (OA)2 – (CA)2

= (OC)2 = 152 – 102

= (OC)2 = 225 – 100

= OC = \(\sqrt {125}\) = 5\(\sqrt {5}\) cm
