Options:

Ascariasis

Elephantiasis

Amoebiasis

Ringworm

Correct Answer:

Elephantiasis

Explanation:

The correct answer is Option (2) → Elephantiasis

Wuchereria bancrofti and Wuchereria malayi are types of filarial worms that can cause a condition known as elephantiasis or filariasis. These worms live in the lymphatic vessels of the lower limbs, as well as in the genital organs, leading to chronic inflammation and damage over many years. The adult worms reside in the lymphatic vessels, which are a part of the lymphatic system. They can cause obstruction and damage to these vessels, leading to the accumulation of lymph fluid in various parts of the body, particularly the limbs and genital area.

The transmission of these pathogens occurs through the bite of female mosquito vectors. Female mosquitoes of certain species, such as the Culex, Aedes, and Anopheles mosquitoes, serve as the intermediate hosts for the filarial worms. When a mosquito feeds on the blood of an infected individual, it ingests microscopic larvae called microfilariae, which circulate in the bloodstream.
