A typical angiosperm embryo sac at maturity is 7-celled and 8-nucleate.
The 7 cells are:
- Egg cell: This is the largest cell in the embryo sac, and it contains the female gamete.
- Synergids: These are two small cells that are located near the egg cell. They help to guide the sperm cells to the egg cell.
- Antipodal cells: These are three small cells that are located at the opposite end of the embryo sac from the egg cell.
- Central cell: This is the largest cell in the embryo sac, and it contains two polar nuclei. These polar nuclei can fuse with a sperm nucleus to form a triploid nucleus, which is the start of the endosperm.
The 8 nuclei are:
- 1 nucleus in the egg cell
- 2 nuclei in the synergids
- 3 nuclei in the antipodal cells
- 2 nuclei in the central cell
