In an election between two candidates, a candidate secured 60% of the valid votes and is elected by a majority of 180 votes. The total number of valid votes is:

Options:

1200

1000

800

900

Correct Answer:

900

Explanation:

Let total number of votes = 100x

winner votes = 60% of 100x

= \(\frac{3}{5}\) × 100x = 60x

looser votes = 100x - 60x = 40x

Difference = 60x - 40x = 20x

According to question ,

20x = 180

x = 9

Total number of votes = 100 × 9 = 900
