Inorganic: General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements

Question:

In the following question, a statement of assertion followed by a statement of reason is given. Choose the correct answer out of the following choices:

Assertion : The metal sulphides and carbonates are converted to metal oxides in the process of extraction of metal from them.

Reason: Easier to obtain metal from its oxide, as compared from its sulphides and carbonates.

Options:

Both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

Both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

Assertion is true but the reason is false.

Assertion is false but the reason is true.

Correct Answer:

Both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

Explanation:

All the metal sulphides and carbonates are converted to their respective metal oxides as it is easier to extract the metals from their respective oxides. This owes to the difference in Gibbs free energy in the reaction of obtaining metal from its sulphides/carbonates and oxides. The reaction of obtaining metals from oxides has a more negative ΔG value than that of the reaction of obtaining metals from their sulphides/carbonates.
