Question:

Read the Poem below and answer the question.

A Bird Came Down

A Bird, came down the Walk -
He did not know I saw
He bit an Angle Worm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw,

And then, he drank a Dew
From a convenient Grass -
And then hopped sidewise to the Wall
To let Beetle pass -

He glanced with rapid eyes,
That hurried all abroad -
They looked like frightened Beads, I thought,
He stirred his Velvet Head -

Like one in danger, Cautious,
I offered him a Crumb,
And he unrolled his feathers,
And rowed him softer Home -

Than Oars divide the Ocean,
Too silver for a seam,
Or Butterflies, off Banks of Noon,
Leap, splashless as they swim.

"Cautious" is used in reference to which character in the poem -

Options:

the poet

the bird

the beetle

the worm

Correct Answer:

the poet

Explanation:

The correct answer is option 1: the poet

In the line “Like one in danger, Cautious, I offered him a Crumb,” the grammatical subject is “I” (the poet). The adjective “Cautious” is placed in apposition to the subject and therefore describes the poet’s manner of action. It indicates that the poet, aware that the bird might be frightened, carefully and gently offers the crumb so as not to scare it away. Although the bird is indeed alert and fearful elsewhere in the poem, the word “Cautious” in this specific line modifies the poet’s action, not the bird’s state.
